The USS James Kirk was a Federation Sovereign-class starship operated by Starfleet in the late 24th century.
In the autumn of 2372, the James Kirk was launched from San Francisco Fleet Yards, just weeks after the launch of its sister ship, the USS Enterprise-E. Unlike the USS Enterprise, the Kirk was equipped with the new Peregrine fighters that would see extensive use during the upcoming Dominion War.
Among the pilots aboard the James Kirk at its launch was Ensign Sephiria Arn who remained aboard the Kirk until the last year of the war, when she was temporarily relived of duty due to suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Nevertheless, her service record during the war earned her a promotion to lieutenant (junior grade).
Commander Marcus Alexander Slayton was assigned to the Kirk as executive officer in 2375 shortly before the Dominion War ended. He served aboard the Kirk in this capacity until 2379, when he was promoted to Captain and given command of the USS Orcus.
In 2377 Kirk was one of the first ships to be assigned a Tactical CONN unit. Marcus found the concept of the Tactical CONN interesting, and met all of the new Tac Conn pilots including Ensign Tessa May Lance who would later serve aboard the USS Theurgy.
Tessa May Lance served aboard the James Kirk the year after she graduated from Starfleet Academy in 2377, the same time Christopher Slayton‘s older brother Marcus Alexander Slayton was serving as executive officer. During the year Tessa Lance served aboard the Kirk she met a Vulcan helmsman named Sh'muk who was a master of the Terran game of pool.
