The USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-B) was a Federation Excelsior-class starship operated by Starfleet in the late 23rd and early 24th century. It was the third Federation Starfleet vessel to bear the name Enterprise.

On stardate 9715.5, in the year 2293, the Enterprise-B was commissioned early for its maiden voyage was mainly a shakedown cruise with honored guests and journalists aboard for publicity reasons. Its first commanding officer was Captain John Harriman. Shortly after launching from a drydock orbiting Earth, it received a distress call from two Federation transport ships, the SS Lakul and the SS Robert Fox. The ships, which were carrying El-Aurian refugees, had become trapped in an energy distortion called the Nexus. Because the Enterprise-B lacked equipment necessary to rescue the ships, the Robert Fox was destroyed before the Enterprise could transport its passengers. Only 47 survivors were brought aboard from the Lakul before it, too, was destroyed. (Star Trek Generations)

The number rescued increased to 48 when one of the refugees gave birth to a half-human baby boy who was later named Ekon Okotie-Eboh.

(So far it has not been revealed how long the USS Enterprise-B served Starfleet, but it no longer in service by the 2330’s.
