The USS Fermi was a Federation starship operated by Starfleet in the mid 24th century. In 2368 Carrigan Trent graduated from Starfleet Academy was assigned to the science vessel Fermi and felt as though it was a waste of his time and a dead-end to his career and spent his eighteen months aboard the Fermi working on his first professional paper in Starfleet's Tactical Development Journal: “Use of Short Duration Unmodulated Sensor Pulses for Shield Geometry Vulnerability Assessment.” He was one of the youngest and most junior contributors to this publication.
