Mia was still a bit shaken from her panic attack but tried not to show it. After all, she had been eager to join in this little adventure and she didn’t want to ruin it for either Frank or Alana. She allowed Frank to guide her into the alley and prayed he would not feel how she still seemed to be shaking. Maybe it wasn’t outwardly obvious, but she sure felt it.  She glanced back at the building as Alana headed back inside to do whatever she was going to do. Mia just gritted her teeth knowing there was going to be another explosion soon and she had to fight the urge to call for the arch and run out of the holodeck.

She walked with Frank as he tried an old fashioned key in several doors and then realized his mistake. She was a little nervous about taking the tommy-gun from him, she just hoped it had a safety and that it was engaged. She hate to have accidentally shot her rescuer, even if he didn’t actually get hurt.  When she heard one of the cops asking about the noises Frank was making getting the door clear she almost  wanted to run back to his office. Luckily the other one was less inclined to investigate and Mia breathed a quiet sigh of relief.  Frank finally got the door open and went inside to get the car. The vehicle slowly and quietly rolled out with Frank at the wheel and he leaned over to unlock the door for Mia.

Mia jumped in as quickly as possible and pulled the door closed as quietly as she could. She was more than happy to relieve herself of the oversized gun in her hands and quickly turned and dropped it on the back seat. “Good, I wouldn’t know how to use that thing anyway,” She said as she turned back to Frank, “I was afraid I might accidentally shoot you or something.”

When the explosion came Mia could not help but give a little squeak and then she hugged herself to stop from doing anything else.  What felt like an eternity later, but was probably more like a minute or so the bounced a little as Alana dropped onto the back of the vehicle then rolled off and immediately got into the back seat, grabbed the aforementioned weapon and began to roll down the window.

Mia looked at Frank and almost smiled to hide her nervousness, “What now? Do we have to go past those officers? Where are we going to go now? Anyplace I think of, my brother will know about and probably already has his goons casing them.”

Frank was having a good time.  Alana had managed to kick off a crazy part of a plan to get away and if it worked, then they wouldn't need to go shooting some of the law in their getaway.  Most of the time, private detectives were mainly mercenary snoops, or gray area thugs.  Given the hardware and the locales that Frank and Alana had frequented, they flited between the two with occasional dabbles into the legitimate, and more than one trip into the utterly disreputable.  The fact they hadn't been caught yet meant they'd gotten away with their journey to the dark side more than once.  The conflagration that was starting in the building across the street was starting to lick the side of the window as smoke poured out.  Frank made sure to keep the lights off as he slowly pulled the car to the edge of the alley driveway.  Opening the door, one hand trace the contours of the car as he moved to get a peak around the corner into the street.  Sure enough, while one officer was busy trying to help the injured mafiasos, the other one ran into the building to see if he could render assistance.

The bearded PI quickly ran back to the car and closed the door with a slam before gently driving away and putting distance between themselves and the disaster zone. There was no wild acceleration of squealing tires or heavy revving of the combustion engine.  As far as one could make out, it was just a vehicle pulling out and leaving.  Nothing more. Nice and inconspicuous.

As Frank drove away, he looked at the rear view mirror and his eyes narrowed.  Not at anything following them, or even the flaming red head that was keeping an eye out the back of the car, but at the scientist that seemed more rattled than was warranted by a holonovel.  As long as one didn't take the immersion too seriously, there should be a clean break between reality and the fantasy.  Frank quirked an eyebrow but said nothing more. He might be reading things that weren't really there.

Mia had remembered her lines or her role in the novel though and she'd coughed up a potentially useful bit of information.  "You said that any place you can think of, your brother is gonna have his goons casing out? What places would those be and where do you think he'd send his most trusted lieutenant?"  Frank smiled reassuringly.  "It might get a bit messy, but Alana and I will take care of that, then red here can pull your brother's location and any other information we need to raid him."  Frank's smile turned evil. "Maybe we can make him see reason.  Otherwise, dead men tell no tales."  Frank didn't like dropping that one, but he had the sense that he needed to see how Mia was really doing, especially since she'd seemed to do quite a good job of hiding what she was thinking during the culinary tour till this point.  As any good senior officer did with those he was charged with, she now bore watching.

Pierce noticed what Frank had that Mia wasn't exactly entirely enjoying herself. But she was attempting to do so for their sake which she was both happy about but wanted to reassure her that it wasn't real. Regardless of what happened but the opportunity passed and she listened to the engine's gasoline roar as it picked up speed down the streets.

Keeping an eye out she took note of the surroundings as Frank piped up. She smiled at Frank's suggestion of messy interactions with the goons. The comments he continued to say made her smirk as she realized she wasn't fully invested. Shaking it off she dove back into the role. "That's right Frank. We'll make sure he never bothers you again if that's what it comes down to. Let's just hope we don't have to and he decides for himself. Would hate to soil my new trenchcoat with blood after all." She winked at Mia, one female to another.

Hoping the playful banter would relieve some of the tension in the holonovel. That was when they were stopped. Not by a bunch of goons but by random turkeys trotting the street. Gobble sounds abound as they sat at a standstill now off of a dirt road near town. "Well, if that isn't for comic relief I don't know what is." A chuckle escaped her lips as she touched Mia's shoulder and lipped at her, Are you okay?

Mia still had her arms wrapped around her torso, mostly to keep from letting Frank or Alana notice the shaking of her hands. She kept a mental mantra going in her head that this wasn’t real and they weren’t going to explode in front of her. Frank’s question caught her in the middle of her mantra and she had to focus herself back to the holonovel. Looking over at Frank she chewed at her lower lip for a moment before answering, “Umm, well, there’s the obvious of my apartment and work.  Umm... a couple of friends digs, and maybe grandad’s cabin,  but I haven’t been there in a while.” She had winced slightly when he made the final comment, but that’s what this holonovel was supposed to be, so she’d forced herself not to comment.

Mia smiled slightly at Alana, “I,  ahhh, appreciate the help. And I also hope you don’t have to ruin your new coat.” She turned back to look out the windshield and had to blink a few times as the vehicle rolled to a stop. “Are those...?” She left the rest of the question hanging as she looked back at Alana.
Mia saw the question and took a deep breath, “I will be,” She whispered quietly, before looking back at the turkey trot happening in front of the automobile,  “maybe.”

Frank kept his eyes on the road with occasional flicks into the rear view mirror as he watched Mia work to pull herself together.  Unless Mia visibly broke, he wouldn't interrupt what they were doing, but he filed the information away to tell her to go talk to the counsellors before they broke orbit.  "That's a lotta ground to cover doll, but let's see what we dig up."

The PI mulled over the options.  "Your home's too obvious, let's swing by the friend's places.  People usually want someone they can trust to hide with, makes em feel safe. Either that, or the woods since they think it's isolated, but since he's your kin, he'll know about the place as well."  Frank snorted. "Which one of your friends is the most likely, meanin you'd trust he most to hide with.  Then which is the least?

Pierce took a breather as she sat back slightly in relaxation from the adrenaline rush and slightly because she knew what was outside the holodeck held higher demands and more problems than those within the safety's of the holodeck. Glancing at the woodlands and the occasional house she wondered where they were headed and what the story would unfold before them.

After all, this was a holonovel and she quite enjoyed a good mystery. Granted, murder was also afoot but it gave her something different to mull over than her typical day to day. She wondered if she'd damaged her clothing any. A thought she'd not have had in the past, but nowadays she knew that her appearance had certain concerns and benefits to it. And being careful to not rip her clothing in unsuspecting places. Thankfully, she had the thick garb of a detective which in this car only added to her heat.

Taking the jacket off she wore a tight white button up blouse like shirt that hugged her curves tightly. Leaning forward she placed her face in her hands as she groaned and stretched in the limited space.

"Sorry. It's been a long day..."

Glancing over she could tell something bothered the blond besides her other than the storyline. But decided to let it go for now and continue with things on the narrative.

"So how long Frank? We find the place yet?"

The slight constant vibration of the vehicle had, at first, concerned her till she realized it was natural when the vehicle was actually in contact with the road surface. She had been thinking about the question Frank had posed, Who could she trust? Most of her friends were also his friends, or wanted to be.  Although why they would want to be friends with a monster like him was beyond her. It was then that she remembered Sally Hudson. Sally still lived somewhere in the Catskills. And her family had a rather large pice of land much further into New York. Somewhere in the Adirondacks, if she recalled.

“Maybe She Can help,” Mia said without any other explanation. “It’s far enough away, my brother won’t think to look for me in Coxackie! He doesn’t even know Sally!” She look at Frank and smiled hopefully. “I mean I haven’t talked about her to him in years, but I keep in contact with her!”

The bearded PI nodded.  Maybe they weren't going to be pulling nay finger nails tonight.  But since this was the mob, they could really be spending the night later playing make the finger chips.  Taking a breath, he made turn for the high way that would lead the trio to Catskills. "Sounds good, time for a road trip."

Frank blinked as the scene fuzzed out for a second to be replaced with a small town with few lights up ahead off the 87.  This being a holonovel, time had no meaning aside from it was darker than the bottom of a well on a moonless night.  "There shouldn't be a mob presence this far out in the boonies unless they're moon shining, but that's more of a local thing.  The people in the hills are notorious for not letting anyone tread on their turf for that."

It didn't take too much longer for the trio to arrive at the address following Mia's instructions, a large brick tenement home next to the First Reformed Church with a broad porch. There wasn't much in the way of electricity out in the small town, so the streets were virtually pitch black with only the occasional candle or lamp giving an eerie glow to some of the rooms. It was enough to raise a person's hackles since they place really looked like ghost town.

Pulling the car to a stop and killing the engine, Frank could hear a couple of dogs barking in the distance along withe some yelling mainly for the dogs to shut up. "Alana, why don't you take Mia inside and introduce yourselves.  I'll take a look around and join you inside."

Pierce chuckled as the holonovel dissolved and blinked to the next locale of the plot. If only life offered this every so often she thought to herself. Granted, she was given that at one point in time that the time travel debacle happened. But another story for another day. She returned her gaze to the town and the few lights off the roadside. What it must have felt like to be truly isolated and yet so alarming.

"Hopefully we don't run into anyone suspicious out here." She muttered to Frank. The wind from the window blew her crimson hair as she sat next to Mia.

Arriving she had to admire the building. It was decently large but nothing compared to the design Starfleet was notorious for building. Something a pre-warp civilization was known for was this type of world...a simpler time.

The hair on her neck stood on end as she approached the building, peering in the windows. "Looks clear Frank but good idea to scope around the joint." Turning to Mia she nodded to the blonde woman to follow. "C'mon. Let's see if your friend is inside, or at least you can introduce us to her."

A smile grew across her face as she grabbed Mia's arm, and guided her gently to help ease Mia but herself as well. Something wasn't sitting right with her and she couldn't put her finger on it yet. She just hoped this Sally was a friend.
