Day 03 [1230 hrs.] A Routine Inspection

Lieutenant Commander Leon Marquez was an officer who took a vested interest in the working components of any vessel he was stationed aboard. Though Theurgy had a larger compliment, and the ship was in a state of enhanced vigilance, Marquez had little if any time to meet some of the new crew; not to mention the potential of Morali-Devotees behind every new face.

Marquez wasn't paranoid, but rather realistic and mindful of the odds, given the reports of cult violence he'd received and the incident with the torpedo the day before. Fortunately, he'd made good on his word to Jimmy to take care of Sharky while the Ensign was out on the away team. That morning's wingsuiting session was still fresh on his mind, as was his new friend, Alessia Garcia, who'd reccomend he pay her 'office' a visit sometime.

Her office, was, in point of fact, the Theurgy hangar bay. This was a place Leon intended to visit in a professional manner anyway, in that he needed to personally consider the vessel's starfighter compliment. With the volatility of the Azure Nebula outside, the fighters serving as mobile weapons platforms were the ship's first line of defense before the ship's kinetic weapons cannons controlled from his console at any of the ship's battle bridges. Leon led Sharky on a search for the officer in charge. Dan "Salvo" Havenborn was one of his former crewmates but had flew point in the away team mission, ergo was unavailible, and Garcia herself was currently running Combat Air Patrol, but at the least, he would be able to compare the Theurgy to the Hornet, even though the latter was in effect a refit Galaxy-class.

Marquez was nobody's tourist, and neither was Sharky, who was never two feet away from his colleague, who seemed more curious about the buzzing hangar bay than the CTO, who was already taking inventory on his PaDD about the new fighter classes that had come into service while he was out behind enemy lines for the last three years, cut off from the Federation. Some vessels he recognized from designs drawn by fellow cadets from his ensign years, others were unique entirely. He nodded approvingly to nobody in particular before making his way to the briefing lounge, only to find it empty, but the room's theme reminded him of his own days back when the Danube-class was the newest project on the assembly line. Forgetting his place, Sharky bounded up to the front row and seemed to sit at attention while Marquez summoned up the display console to see the CAP patrols in real time, making a note of Alessia's pattern. He heard someone enter and turned to face them.

Sten was at his desk, busy going over the new assignments since integrating the crew of the Resolve into what was left of his existing crew he was seeing what assets they had and of course trying to make things more efficient where he could.  He was scratching his head looking at a schematic on his PADD where he had people organized when one of the Junior mechanics knocked on his door.. "Sorry to disturb you Chief..." He waved him in without saying anything and went back to his schematic.  His people knew him and knew to just get to the point.

"Sir, there is an officer walking the bay, headed this way, and.. he has an.... an animal.. on the deck.."  The mechanic almost flinched when he said it.  He knew that It would would irritate the Chief.  Sten looked up at him with a perturbed look that said really? without speaking a word and the mechanic nodded.  He waved his hand to the mechanic to dismiss him and clicked save on the document on his PADD and stood up and headed towards the briefing room. As he approached he did not recognize the officer, but recognized the insignia as one of a Lt Commander.  He sighed to himself hoping this wouldn't be an incident.  He coughed as he approached.  "Chief Covington reporting, Sir.  What can I do for you, and what in the bloody hell is that creature doing on my deck?"

He had a rough couple of days and was tired and irritable.  The sex two nights before had helped in both removing old and creating new stress as he had found out about Evelyn and his work out the day before just had not been enough to get the edge off.  He sized up this new officer as he awaited for his reply.

On his first night on Theurgy before the Captain's announcement to the crew over the hangar, his original First Officer habit of taking names of particular individuals or department chairs (or equivalent personnel) came into effect, then uncertain what his role would be, if he'd have any in this new ship. In sickbay on their first day, he'd made note of some people he hadn't met in the Captain's meeting with other department chairs. No Chief of the Boat, but the top knuckle-dragger was one gentleman who caught his attention. A former pilot himself, Marquez made it a point to meet the person responsible for the maintenance of the fighters he, now as Chief Tactical Officer would come to rely on.

"Chief Sten Michael Covington." In a neutral but patient regard, Marquez's back was to the Chief as his gravelly voice recited some of the achievements and accolades Covington's reputation had fostered. "The 'papa bear'; Notable expert on the Peregrine-class fighter among others, a subject matter expert on carrier combat tactics, maintenance, and one of the most experienced Noncomissioned officers in Starfleet." By the time Marquez reached that last mention, he'd been approximately 3 paces from Sten, wearing a regard between admiration and respect hidden beneath an aura of neutrality.

"I'm Leon Marquez, former callsign, Striker. This 'thing' is Specialist Sharky of Starfleet Security." Leon introduced before he whistled a low-pitch, two-noted dual whistle and the 90lb gray pit bull wearing a black-and-gold security harness got off his seat and sat between Marquez and Covington, turning his head between the speakers. "Given the succeptibility of Lieutenant Morali's fan club against lone officers and crew, I thought it prudent to have a trusted and sworn specialist guarding my back as I made the rounds throughout the ship."

"Thea, Music. Ancient Rock. Papa Bear's playlist." Marquez stepped back towards the briefing room's map and readouts, inviting the chief to join him. "I'll be brief. In the Dominion War, my captain tried to have you transferred to the USS Hornet. We converted an Exploration Galaxy-class into an escort carrier sent to the Romulan front. Tactics not seen since the Cardassian Border Wars and the pre-First Contact era were resurrected. Carrier combat, like it or not has once again become the beating heart of space combat." Marquez explained, summoning a read-out of the dreadnought's fighter compliment of transports, fighters, unregistered craft and runabouts. "As Chief Tactical Officer, I need to knoww what my options are in your department."

Sten nearly rolled his eyes as he listened to man list his full name, and his accomplishments.  He listened and didn't move as he walked towards him. He brought his hand to his mouth and coughed as he nearly choked when he called the dog a security specialist.  After that comment, he couldn't really concentrate on much else the man was saying.  Sten was a thoughtful man, a hard working man who took his job seriously, but his bullshit detector was on overload and anyone, officer or not that knowingly disregarded the rules of his deck, he couldn't really take anything he had to say seriously until that was dealt with.

"With all due respect, the name and title you give your pet, though endearing is complete bollocks."  His face was stern and his voice even as he continued.  "I set the rules on my deck, and there are no animals allowed on it.  You can remove Sharky, or I can have him removed by the proper pest control civilian group on the ship.  It is ultimately your choice."

Sten backed up a few steps and turned, but before he started walking towards his office, he added: "If there is any information you need to know that is not in Thea's data files, once the dog is removed, I will see if I can make time for you while I am rebuilding my department after a hell of a battle.." Sten then started to walk back towards his office slowly as he pulled up his PADD to see what messages he had gotten since he walked in there.

"You haven't answered my question, Mister Covington." Leon observed as he took the seat of one of the pilots in the front row while he allowed the chief to have his moment. He was neither annoyed nor deterred by the old veteran's distraction.

Leon kept maintaining his mind on the bigger picture and his body language and the speed at which he dealt with Covington's distraction conveyed this. "Thea? Please send my colleague to the Zoological lab. He was taught to respond to manners good or otherwise." Marquez scratched Jimmy's pet once, as if differentiating. "Thank you very much, Thea." Marquez resolved the matter in a little more than half of the time it took for Covington to convey his displeasure.

Sharky tilted his head up, as if smiling or understanding; he was no stranger to transporter beams and stood in anticipation. That particular matter was concluded. Good thing, too, for the sake of anyone unfamiliar with the Resolve's security department mascot or his notorious smile.  The Security Chief hadn't upheld the Resolve asset's status as a deputized member of the crew, but that was not a matter to contest, despite a boat full of mutineers.

"I asked for a status report on anything ready to fly within the next few minutes so the next hours would be advantageous for all aboard and all concerned." And it'd better take the next few seconds... or I wouldn't be down here. There had to have been a reason this guy turned down a task force command ship's department chair posting. Marquez thought, as he maintained his 'just-the-facts' regard he'd acquired from mirroring the lenses of Vulcan secondary eyelids during his dealings with them during the Eagle Project. "I mean, with all due respect."

Sten looked up from his PADD and listened to him and was about to say something.. thought different of it and then said it anyway.  "What question?  You never asked a bloody question...." He watched a bit annoyed as he made it seemed like a show of having the mutt transported out of the fighter bay.  Then listened to what he really wanted as he wasn't paying attention to him earlier.  The man asked him a question to which he already had the answer to in front of him.

Sten Sighed and clicked a few buttons on his PADD and the readouts with green lights for all the ships in the fighter bay popped up on the view screen in the Briefing room.  "All of the Valkyrie and Valrahns we have seem to be operational.  The only ship on my deck that is not ready to go out or authorized to do so in the Reaver in Maintenance Bay Two.  If you would like more information about their capabilities and the capabilities of the pilots that fly them, you would be better off talking to Ravon, whom I am sure you are already familiar with.  The Maintenance needs for the Valkyries are also on the network that you have access to, and we are still working on what all is needed routinely for the Valarhns as they are new to us."

He paused for a moment and rubbed his temples and then looked over at Marquez.  "If you need an escort to look at the ships, I can get one for you so you aren't blown away by any of the engine tests, I can assign someone not critical to our current need to show you around, other than that, Enjoy some replicated coffee before you leave." He nodded to the man and headed back with quick steps towards his office to continue his work.  He wasn't one for small talk and had work to do.

"You're right. Asking you for a sitrep of hangar-occupancy readiness wasn't conveyed to you in the form of a question, so I'll look past your taking me for some kind of lost knuckle-dragger who's lost his wrench while repairing an impulse engine without proper hazmat gear who hasn't ensured primary and auxiliary power have been properly deactivated per general safety regulations. I'll skip you the precise section numbers, out of this being your deck and all." There was a slight false sense of conceding a point, however trivial to the retort as he rose, clearly not one to let this matter conclude without results.

He didn't notice any mention of shuttlecraft. "The ship's AI can give me what I need to know with my eyes closed from any point on the vessel." Marquez clarified, unsatisfied as he snapped quizzically, striding out the door, keeping his distance but letting his pitch conclude.

"Numbers, Mister Covington." Marquez didn't flinch when asking for the amount of fighters by class and readiness. He interlocked his fingers, listening to the crew chief's report, unsatisfied with the lack of specifics. "So that I can best prepare the SCO with the best COA<Course of Action>, given the battlespace and its volatility." He wasn't about to waste time with the Sun Tzu lecture or petty patronizing, but he took analytical aim at the readouts issued to him, getting information on the fighters and other craft themselves was straightforward enough for the first-generation Danube pilot. He made note of the runabout he'd shot down yesterday with both disappointment at the loss of a reliable craft and satisfaction of neutralizing its crew of renegades.

Sten was about to walk back into his office to his coffee and the pile of work that he had for as far as he was concerned the conversation was over but the man went on.  He listened to him.  The agitation on his face grew and a vein on his forehead could be seen throbbing the more he listened.  Did this man think he was the CO or the Captain that he had full run of his department or his deck? Sten took a deep breath.  He was working in Starfleet likely long before this rookie was even born so didn't want to ruin his soon to be replicated lunch by making another officer cry.

"I would appreciate if you just keep the bloody bullshit to yourself and just speak plainly and clearly.  However, thank you for admitting all the information you want you can get from the damn computer yourself and you are just wasting my fucking time.  Look.  I realized things may have went a certain way when you worked on the Resolve.  You may have had run of the Fighter Bay and been able to walk in any time you wanted and talked to the staff and the Deck Chief there.  The Theurgy is different ship and has different protocols however.  My deck is is a need to access area, in general only the fighter pilots, my techs and engineering need access it.  All other save the Captain, follow the protocols and request a scheduled visit so they don't end up in the afterburners of one of our engine tests.  Now.  As I said. I have work to do.  So you can see yourself out and get the information you need from Thea as you said." then he added... "Sir.."

At that he turned back into his office and shut the door behind him, going back to his work.

Antisocial, refusal to cooperate, and disregard for authority. Perhaps this old man deserved his calling in life. Not someone Leon would've tolerated on any posting, much less anything past crewman rank, but this was Ives' boat and circumstances were what they were. "No offense, but this this will be noted.", Leon gave Covington his space, before returning to the nearest turbolift to make a quick stop at the zoology lab. No one got left behind, bipedal or otherwise. Petty vulgar speech was beneath his brand of patience, for now.

On his combadge Marquez summoned Klex. "Klex here." The Denobulan warhead specialist and former Infantryman affectionately nicknamed 'the constable' for his decades-long profession. He was at the Second Vector's torpedo bay, overseeing the security of the warhead that was nearly used in a recent attempted mutiny, when he received a ping from his former XO and longtime associate.

"I'm assigning you to Vector 02. Tarsi's set up shop on V-3. I want you to give the Theurgy's personnel aboard a wide berth and conduct in a responsible manner I have come to expect of you." Leon stated, checking his old wrist-chrono, an older-model chrome-plated model, having other places to be to know what to expect of the craft, and more likely to be satisfied in the old man's recommendation to meet the SCO. Perhaps a mutual background in piloting would prove more mutually reassuring.

"Culture clash, Striker?" the Denobulan asked, as if knowing what to expect. "Chief-Tac isn't Exec, as you know."

"Just a knuckle-dragger with a superiority complex-- age-entitlement, no offense to you. Just don't meddle in his affairs, Constable. Still, don't let any warheads fall into unauthorized hands; 'fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, you shoulda covered all bases', remember that addage of yours? Torps are your task when you're on V-2." Leon tasked from the turbolift. Without Sharky, whom he was on his way to secure, he stepped warily around each corner to get to his location. He wasn't about to be taken down by any mutineer on any avenue, not if his last action was to be stonewalled by, well, it was best not to register emotionally. "Scrutiny... just don't blink." Marquez kept his directives within the protocols in his field.

"I know the type. Understood." Klex concluded the transmission, before taking an inventory of the fighter compliment and their arsenals to later send up the chain of command for the hourly reports. Through Thea, the ex-Constable was able to take a calculated note of the starfighter compliment, roster and patrol patterns as a precaution, knowing Leon Marquez was usually one to have all bases covered on the eve of a potential battle.
