USS Resolve: Closing the Rift

“Ah got it, Lead!” said Meony as she wove her fighter behind the rogue craft, which was chasing a fellow Wolf. She'd just been dispatched to clear her wingmate's tail. Lining up her shot, she squeezed the trigger and watched as a flurry of crimson bolts peppered the shields of the rogue, tearing away the energy barrier, before stabbing dark holes into the hull, and she followed up with a single micro torpedo, destroying the fighter's engines and life-support systems. As the craft exploded in a brilliant orange ball of fire, Meony shot right through the explosion, turning herself briefly into a fireball as she gave chase to other hostiles.

This had been the norm for the Grey Wolves of the Resolve, every world they met answered their hails with intense hostility, as if their very existence was an insult to the sentients of this aptly named sector, and they sought to either capture or outright destroy the Starfleet vessel. The Grey Wolves had seen nothing but battle every single time they jumped out of warp to investigate inhabited worlds. There were plenty of worlds with sentients, as they found, but they had yet to find one that didn't respond by opening fire or sending ships after them. This was the thirteenth world, and they had warp-capable ships and fighters. Fortunately their shields, armour and weaponry wasn't much trouble.

After nearly an hour of a fighting retreat, Meony had finally docked, debriefed and changed out of her flight suit.

She sat alone at a small table for two, a drink in her hands. She had trouble lifting the cup to her lips, due to her hands shaking uncontrollably. Her nerves were frayed, and her lips were trembling. She'd been dealing with limited sleep, irregular meals, and the growing despair in her guts, that they would never ever see home, or that she wouldn't survive the journey back, assuming they could get their bearings. Captain Kendrick kept the crew together, encouraging them, giving them rest, or pushing them, where necessary, and he had taken to allowing the crew to keep weapons on them at all times, after they met a race that could beam aboard right through shields.

The phaser at her hip gave the redhead very little comfort. She tried to lift the cup to her lips once again but dropped the cup and spilled the drink all over the table as her palm and fingers spasmed and flexed by itself, and she stared impotently at her hand as it just hung in the air, shaking violently. Her lips trembled in tandem with it. She was normally the one to make snide remarks or sarcastic forms of encouragement to anyone that spoke to her, but right now? She wasn't feeling brave, or hopeful. She was tired, and afraid, and even a blind person could see it.

Daniel had walked into the Crew Mess Hall, he and his oldest friend Ensign Uriah Ahern, callsign Knight, which was incidentally also his nickname due to the man’s ability to act chivalrous no matter the circumstance.  He and Knight hadn’t started on the greatest of terms and their first meeting had devolved into a fist fight, it was after that they had been assigned to the same fighter and the rest is history.  Now they were the best of friends and almost inseparable.  Knight was close behind him but the two went separate ways.  Knight made his way over to a striking Orion woman, Ensign A’vura Zeshryr, the two had been an item for awhile now though from what Knight had told him they weren’t in any hurry to take it fast.

Daniel could respect that, he and Valerie had been like that when they had started dating but she had made the first move and that relationship had been quite the experience for him.  He was glad that they had ended on good terms.  However as he looked around the room he spotted Ensign Krystal Tancredi, callsign Meony, she was part of 3rd Flight and he considered her a friend.  The Resolve unlike most ships had a slightly altered Squadron organization.  Since they had eighteen fighters each Flight was made up of six fighters, Lieutenant Malcom Grant commanded the First, Daniel commanded the Second and Junior Lieutenant Demetria Daniels commanded the Third.  He could see that she wasn’t doing too well today so he decided to sit down and see if he could help her out.

“Ensign Tancredi, do you mind if I join you?”  He asked her as he stood near the chair.
Defeat, Genocide; why quibble with semantics.

When Daniel began to approach her, the young pilot firmly gripped her fist to stop the shaking, and used her other hand to swipe a napkin to clean the liquid flowing around the table. She was nearly done when the man spoke, and she looked up at him, unable to hide her misery or exhaustion. “Howdy, sugah,” said Meony, her voice lacking any enthusiasm whatsoever, “sure thing. Lotsa space far as Ah cain see.” She tried to smile, but gave up shortly after. Why bother? she thought to herself. It wasn't like he didn't see how bad she looked.

It was probably why he was coming over in the first place.

She studied his RIO, who was hanging out with I-Can't-Believe-She's-Still-A-Virgin A'vura Zeshryr. Her own RIO was spending time with her husband, just tend tables away. She could sense that Meony needed some time away and alone, at least, at the time, but now? The redhead couldn't bear being alone any longer, and she welcomed Daniel's presence. “Yeah, Ah'm messed up...” she admitted freely even as he settled down, and lifted up her right hand, which was still trembling quite violently, “Ah cain't tell if that's just mah nerves, or somethin' happened. Docs found nothin' wrong, so...y'know? Ah dunno...”
