Virus 117 Sub-Plot Discussion

Virus 117 Outbreak
The air-born virus released on the Resolve by Havenborn and Tancredi during EP 04 spreads on the Theurgy. It causes an uncontrollable outbreak. With Resolve's CMO dead, the cure may not be so easily available either. Sickbay already flooded with injured since the battle, and the epidemic is made apparent at the morning of Day 02. Its nature at first unknown. It is not immediately determined as a non-life threatening viral agent. Effects include, distorted vision, numbness, swelling of hands or feet, extreme cases have swelling of limbs. May have different symptoms depending on species. The Resolve crew are all inoculated during their voyage + Drauc & Parnak.

  • Outbreak foreshadowed during Day 01 - Check!
  • Virus spreads over the ship during Day 01 and Day 02, symptoms begin during the night - Check!
  • Nicander alerts Ives during morning Day 02, who take quarantine measures. - Check!
  • Who volunteers to have their characters fall victim to this? So far the following characters might/will fall victim with varied symptoms.
    • Deacon - Check!
    • Rihen Neyah (In Putting Her Together) - Check!
    • Sehl th'Chilnes (Alessia's RIO) - Check!
    • Simon Tovarek (Social Visit to the Lost) - Check!
    • Jaya Thorne (Later during Day 02) - Pending
    • Hi'Jak (Affects Klingon/Human thybrids differently, succumbs to this during the away-mission) - Pending
    • Heather McMillan (Affects Radiants differently, succumbs to this during the away-mission) - Pending
In Deacon's case, it might facilitate the need to reverse his DNA re-sequencing. In Hi'Jak's case, temp/perm loss of sight.
  • Regarding the cure:
    • Vivian Martin may have a part of the formula for the cure on her backup storage unit from the Resolve - Pending @Hastata-Nerada
    • Mariner might have another part of the cure somewhere among his loot - Pending @Striker N7
    • Sithick could assist with the research on a cure by having to give some of his blood to help build antibodies. - Pending @Kaligos
    • Drauc T'Laus and Silim parnak were inoculated quite recently, so they may have antibodies in their blood. - Pending @Arista
    • Doctor Maya may also have some means to counter the virus, based on an outbreak that occurred centuries ago. - Pending @Doc M.
  • At some point after 1600 hrs. (Of Valkyries & Valravns), Havenborn and/or Tancredi are discovered to have released Virus 117 on the Resolve prior to docking with Thea during the Battle of Starbase 84. Either of them advise on the nature of the Virus, talking with Nicander or some other medical staff. @Havenborn @Triage

Upon further thought, Alessia needs to NOT be sick, so I have made her RIO, Sehl th'Chilnes (an Andorian thaan) come down with the virus instead.  He can be ill until a cure is found, and hopefully he will not die.

Secondly, I have decided that Jaya shall also become ill, but she believes it to be the after effects of her concussion and thus doesn't think it's serious enough to go to sickbay.  She will power through day 2 as best she can until she MUST go to sickbay later on in the day.

Her primary symptom shall be numbess, coupled with fatigue, inability to focus mentally and vision issues.  These are all common symptoms linked to Post Concussion Syndrome, which would have been explained to her while she was treated in sickbay on day 1.  Because of this, it isn't until her limbs begin swelling that she realizes something else is at play.  This will happen AFTER her promotion meeting (and ensign test, if it happens at the same time) on Day 2.. unless we want to push it to day 3.

If it is integral that Jaya not have THIS virus, then her illness shall simply be the aforementioned PCS (post Concussion Syndrome).

The update is that Heather now succumbs to the virus on Day 03, during the Sabine Away Mission.

Meony and Sinead are Resolvers and thusly immune to the virus. They could provide blood samples to see if a cure can be synthesized from them. Or contribute to a cure.

So when I thought up the virus, there was no "cure" for it.  There was a treatment that the Resolve crew was inoculated with but it stopped the effects of the virus until it ran its course.  Daniel had picked one that was entirely non-lethal for a reason after all.

So once the ex-Resolve crew realize what is going on they could be of some help, maybe?

Top post updated! Pointed out Havenborn and Tancredi there too. :)

Since the Resolve crew was inoculated, @Hastata-Nerada , months or years ago, she can't succumb to the virus.  Only, Theurgy, Harbinger, Resolve, Black Opal and SB84 personnel (except for Drauc and Parnak) are viable to succumb to Virus 117. She could still help with the cure though! :)

Martin does have access to the cure, though only part of it since she doesn't have Dr. Lyhn's files on her. She can work with Nicander to put together the cure if needed, especially after she receives the files that Mariner has.

Consider that done, Martin, they exchanged hands at some point after the dept chair meeting, just mention it at some point in the lab.
