Before its destructon in the battle against Shinzon and the Scimitar in 2379, the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-E) was a 24th century Federation Sovereign class starship operated by Starfleet. The USS Enterprise-E was in active service between 2373 and 2379, and was succeeded by the USS Enterprise-F in early 2380.

The Enterprise-E was launched from San Francisco Fleet Yards on October 29th, 2372. The ship is known for the pivotal role it played during the Borg incursion of 2373, the Son’a Crisis in the Ba’ku Nebula in 2375, and the aborted Reman attack in 2379. During the Dominion War, it patrolled the Beta Quadrant and executed nonmilitary missions in Federation space away from the front like its predecessor did during the Cardassian Conflict of the 2360's.

Crewman First Class Mickayla MacGregor served aboard the Enterprise-E from January of 2372 (several months before the ship was commissioned) until after its battle against the Borg in 2373. The conflict with the Borg was her first taste of real combat and it earned her the promotion to petty officer third class. After the battle, the Enterprise was in drydock for repairs, and Petty Officer MacGregor was transferred to the USS Artemis.

Enlisted tactical specialist Kenneth Urban served aboard the Enterprise-E after the Dominion War and impressed his superiors for his cool head under fire during their engagements against the Son'a and the Remans enough to be sent to Officer’s Candidate School at Starfleet Academy and mustanged up to ensign.

Sometime between 2375 and 2379 the Enterprise underwent a major refit. Four additional aft-facing photon torpedo tubes were added, along with one more forward-facing tube: a twin launcher aft of the bridge, a single launcher above the aft hangar deck and a single launcher at the forward base of the bridge terracing. The bridge was refitted with handrails and the consoles were improved across the port and starboard walls with more detailed displays. Additionally, new nacelle pylons were fitted at that time, slightly longer, broader and more sharply swept than the originals and fitted with four additional phaser arrays.

In 2379, the Enterprise returned to Earth for the wedding of William T. Riker and Deanna Troi. While en route, the ship detected unusual positronic signals from the Kolarin system, discovering another Soong-type android, the prototype B-4. Shortly following, the Enterprise was ordered to Romulus for a meeting with the new Praetor, Shinzon, who apparently wanted to initiate peace talks. Both the discovery of B-4 and the peace overtures turned out to be a ruse to capture Captain Picard and discover tactical positions of Starfleet vessels.

Once it became clear Shinzon was going to use his starship, the Scimitar, to destroy all life on Earth and wage war on the Federation, the Enterprise was to join Starfleet Battle Group Omega and make a stand against Shinzon. Shinzon caught up to the Enterprise in the Bassen Rift and, in the ensuing confrontation, the vessel was severely damaged, including a major hull breach on the bridge, destroying the viewscreen and controls and disabling the warp core.

As a last resort, Picard ordered Counselor Deanna Troi to take control of the Enterprise and have it ram the Scimitar, causing the destruction of much of the saucer section's forward area. The collision disabled the Scimitar, but Shinzon, driven by vengeance, activated his deadly thalaron weapon and trained it on the Enterprise. The weapon was overloaded and the Scimitar was destroyed due to interference from Commander Data, who sacrificed himself to save the Enterprise, Picard and, indirectly, Earth.

Following the Scimitar incident, the Enterprise was towed back to Earth, but it was found that she was too damaged to salvage. The USS Enterprise-E was succeeded by the USS Enterprise-F, yet still under the command of Jean-Luc Picard.

Holographic Program aboard the Versant

When crew from the USS Theurgy and the USS Endeavour were abducted by the Savi, some of them were put in a holographic program featuring the USS Enterprise-E before the battle with Schinzon. It was as a means to provide the crews with a known and safe environment in which they could move about freely. The program was based on intel collected by the Savi from Federation databases, but there were still some errors in the continuity of the program. For example, helmsman Hawk was still alive, and Operations officer Miles O'Brien still served aboard the ship, even though he had long since transferred off the ship by that year.
