Deep Space 4 was a Federation starbase space station that was in service with Starfleet in the 24th century. In his search for the ancient humanoids DNA-puzzle, Richard Galen wanted to get to this starbase on a Vulcan ship, and there gain passage to Caere on an Al-Leyan transport. (TNG: "The Chase")

The computer records from Deep Space 4 contained information on the Hansen family. Captain Janeway on the USS Voyager, while searching for information on Seven of Nine, could only find the information she needed from Starfleet's database for Deep Space 4. (VOY: "The Gift")

In 2377 the newly promoted Lieutenant (senior grade) Nerina was transferred to Deep Space 4, where she worked as the docking manager, acting like an air traffic controller of the 20th and 21st century, directing shipping, checking manifests and the like.

In 2378 Leiutenant Nerina stumbled upon a smuggling ring and was kidnapped. She managed to escape her bonds, overpower the crew (via releasing their cargo, a large supply of a powerful psychedelic drug) and returned to DS4 before anyone had realized she was missing. She was promoted to lieutenant commander and spent the next years running the night shift on Deep Space 4, finding the work challenging and interesting, enjoying herself as she kept the station running smoothly as the main crew slept. Eventually her hard work paid off, and she was transferred to the USS Theurgy to become their new executive officer in 2380.
