Day 08 [1600 hrs.] Quid Pro Quo between Pilots

[ LT Daniel Havenborn | Deck 08, Holodeck 01 | USS Theurgy, Vector 2 ] Attn: @Argyros

Daniel inserted his isolinear chip into the holodeck arch console and selected the ‘sandbox’ program which allowed him to make changes in a controlled environment before they were uploaded to either his holonovel or homeland holoprogram.  Currently the ‘sandbox’ program had the MCV Khan, a fictional vessel that he had designed based on a Neo-ECON starship design he saw once.  It wasn’t an exact copy as Daniel had added his own personal customizations to the design.  The original design was meant to carry thousands of soldiers and material from Mars to Earth and then support the invasion forces as an orbital battleship.  Daniel had liked the battleship idea so he decided to continue with that, but he had also seen plenty of Starfleet designs and knew that bigger didn’t always mean better, so he had changed the design a bit, although he had retained the overall look of the ship though.

The ship had twenty-two decks, however Daniel had only designed twelve of them, the others were just corridors and empty space currently, or just a turbolift and a blank canvas.  The hangar bay and raider bay were the two most detailed areas of the ship, besides what amounted to as his quarters onboard.  The only reason he had quarters on the ship were because of his now late ex-partner Lieutenant Krissy Williams.  She had been fond of this ship and this was one of her favorite places for them to be intimate with each other, although he still hadn’t been able to enter her assigned quarters on the fictional vessel.  Right now he was walking through in active mode, he had activated the ship’s crew and his Starfleet uniform had been replaced with the ship’s fictional uniform, a black uniform with a command belt that went over his right shoulder and under his epaulets which were onyx-colored and displayed a golden rank pin that looked like an ancient-Earth grenade.  The other members of the fictional ship’s crew wore similar uniforms with varying golden rank insignias.

He smiled as he heard the distinctive hum of the ship and the smell of recycled air, those aspects had been suggested by an old friend from the Resolve who hadn’t made it through Hell Sector.  The faces of the crew were similar to those who had served on the Resolve, though they weren't exactly the same as per Starfleet's regulations.  He had used some of his friends faces as a starting point and changed them suit his purposes.  Only those that had served on the Resolve would notice some of the similar features.

[ MCV Khan | Deck 20 Vanguard Troop Deck, Raider Bay ]

Daniel continued his march through the ship’s corridors before finally entering the raider bay, which housed a Ju’Day-class Raider, the ship was based on the Maquis Raider design but as part of the MCV Khan it served as the ship’s Vanguard forces as their assault ship.  Daniel wanted to redesign the raider bay based on how the Allegiant docked into the Theurgy, he also wanted to add in a lounge as well as he felt that was a decent addition.

He knew that Derik would be arriving at some point as Daniel had invited him down and it had been some time since he had hung out with his friend.  This program wasn’t where they typically hung out but it also wasn’t somewhere new either as Daniel had shown it to Derik before, as well as a handful of others from the Resolve.  Daniel began inputting changes and watched as the computer made them in real time, he always preferred making changes and edits this way than just typing on his PADD and then uploading later.  Daniel was quite distracted as he made changes and didn’t hear the holodeck entrance open.

Derik headed for Holodeck 1, passing a few crew members on his way with polite greetings. He’d received an invitation earlier in the day from an old friend. Daniel Havenborn, a fellow pilot with the callsign of “Salvo”, had asked him to come take a look his holonovel. It had been a long time since the last peek he’d had and Veradin was admittedly very curious as to what was new. Arriving at his destination in short order, Derik checked himself in a reflection of a nearby wall console. He’d just come from a shift and had only stopped to pick up his custom PADD from his quarters. He’d designed and replicated it during his later days at the academy. With the down time they had at Aldera, the Trill had taken to carrying it around with him in is off time, try to find inspiration in anything and everything he could.

Satisfied he didn’t look terrible or anything, he stepped off of Theurgy and into a new reality. Derik’s standard issue Starfleet uniform transformed as the program took over. Replacing it was a black uniform with a long command belt that looped over his right shoulder but under the dark green epaulets, and hooked down into the regular belt at his waist. A pair of golden bars signifying his ship rank sat with the rest of the ornamentation. Some sort of non-Starfleet, yet distinctively human, sidearm materialized on his hip, in a holster connected to both the belt at his hip and another belt around his thigh. The program flickered around his PADD attempting to change it into something more appropriate for the scene but seemed to struggle. After a few seconds of trying and failing, the system simply gave up and left the device as it was. Whoops. Sorry if this breaks any of your immersion bud. Nice outfit though.

The Trill was standing in some sort of launch bay.  A few ships designed kind of like Maquis Raiders but more heavily armed were docked on several pads. He watched as several Holo-characters walked around, performing their assigned duties as the program ran its course. It wasn’t too long before Derik’s eyes found Daniel, standing just a little bit away, inputting something on his PADD. Subtle changes would take shape in the room as the author worked: adjusting a character’s path, adding something to the room, etc. It was no surprise then when the Trill walked up on the human unnoticed.

“Daniel? You doing alright bud?” Derik greeted, putting his free hand gently on the man’s shoulder so as to not startle him as much. “Your Holonovel is looking good.”

Watching as the changes continued to happen as he input commands on the PADD he was using, he nearly jumped when he heard the voice of his friend.  He turned to face his friend Derik and smiled as he noticed that the program had managed to update his uniform.  “I’m well, thank you for asking.”  Daniel responded.  “How about yourself?”  Daniel asked as the final changes were made to the bay and the Ju’Day-class Raider materialized into its slot, the landing ramp being lowered and several of the NPC crew making their way towards the ramp to begin loading supplies onboard.  “Well this isn’t the holonovel proper, but thank you.”  Daniel said.

“It has been some time since we’ve been able to relax, is there somewhere else you’d like me to change the program to or is the ship fine?”  He asked as he began to save the changes he’d made so far.  He really hoped that Derik would be fine with spending time on the ship, but he was more than willing to change the program to something else if his friend so desired.  There were several locations onboard the holographic ship that Daniel could think of off the top of his head that would be good locations for them to sit back and catch up.

“Doing well thank you. Enjoying the R&R.” Derik responded politely watching as the last of Daniel’s changes came into existence. Havenborn made a comment about the view not being a good example of the greater novel but the Trill didn’t mind at all. It was still fascinating to delve into another’s fantasy made manifest. To peer into one’s idea of new universe. Some of the faces seemed almost familiar, but the Trill dismissed them as simply being too numerous and blending together. When the Lieutenant asked if Derik wanted to stay, he gave it some thought for a moment and thorough look around before finally answering.

“We can stay here on the ship. I don’t mind. Or we can change venues if you prefer that we leave the holonovel? I’ve been thinking about seeing the ocean again sometime.” They continued to walk the halls of the holo-ship, the Trill unsure as to where they might be heading. He let Daniel take the lead as they moved, the idle chit chat back and forth simply passing the time. Veradin had hoped to talk about Daniel’s work more but the man seemed uninterested, like Derik was peering behind the curtain before the play was started.

“That’s good, it seems that the Theurgy crew and even those of us who found ourselves trapped here could definitely use it.”  Daniel said as he looked around the room at the holographic personnel and decided that he’d had enough of them for now.  “Computer remove crew and maintain subjective mode.”  Daniel said as the computer responded and he watched as the crew vanished.

Daniel motioned for Derik to follow him towards the exit as they walked through the now empty corridors.  “Well I’ve kind of had my fill of the planet for the time being.”  He said, having spent some time on the planet with Amelya, and while it wasn’t as bad as he had thought it was going to be, he did miss his time spent here.  Daniel was leading him to a new section that he had just finished that he hoped Derik might like, an arboretum.  He made some idle chat about how boring the flight patrols were and how he wasn’t fond about the Aldean clothing but didn’t really speak of his work on the ship.  As they entered a turbolift Daniel input the deck he wanted and looked back at Derik.  “So are you seeing anyone onboard?”  He asked, curious to see if his friend had found a paramour yet or if he was still searching.

[ MCV Khan | Deck 11 Unspecified Deck ]

The turbolift came to a stop and the doors opened to reveal a blank space, the familiar holodeck yellow and black grid.  Daniel cocked his head to the right side and looked at the turbolift screen.  Daniel chuckled lightly.  “Well that’s what I get for not paying attention, I selected the wrong deck.”  He said as he paused.  “This is what it looks like before I’ve added anything in, just a turbolift in a blank room.”  Daniel chuckled again.

[ MCV Khan | Deck 09 Operations Support Deck ]

He input the correct deck this time and a short moment later the turbolift stopped and he stepped out onto the utilitarian/militaristic deck plating of the corridor and led Derik to a door with a green border.

Daniel opened the door to reveal a lush green landscape with a small stream snaking its way around the room, a pair of small trees, some shrubs and a dozen potted flowers of different variety.  “Welcome to the Arboretum, I took some inspiration from the Theurgy’s and decided to make my own here.  I’ve got an idea for a plant based alien that attempts to take over the ship that starts out here.”  He said as he motioned for Derik to walk around and get immersed in it.

The two of them boarded the holo-ship’s turbolift, Derik watching with curiosity as Daniel selected a destination the Trill had yet to see. And where might you be taking me this time? He wondered.

“So are you seeing anyone aboard?”

The question took Derik completely by surprise, a full three seconds passing before it fully registered. It shouldn’t have, as it was merely small talk, but Daniel had never asked him such a question before. Indeed, the two of them had such differing interests in partners, Derik was unsure how to respond. Daniels was interested in men about as much as Derik was with women. Well perhaps even less so. “Uh,” Derik considered the question quickly, “I have a couple of people I can turn to for companionship but as for dating anyone in particular, no.” The thought had a slightly depressing undertone. Was he dating anyone really? Nobody had expressed such a desire in some time. I really need to find someone. Under different circumstances, he might have even propositioned Havenborn, yet the man’s unease with such a suggestion would have probably been palpable.

The turbolift slowed, gently coming to a stop. As the door hissed open, Derik couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow. The room simply blank space. His friend chuckled, explaining that he had accidently selected a deck he had yet to start constructing. The Trill simply nodded, a smile at upon his face at the honest mistake. Seems they were both a little distracted.

A few quick taps and they were on their sudo way again, the doors hissing open to a corridor like any other aboard the fantasy ship. A short walk later brought them to a room Derik didn’t think he’d ever see aboard the MCV Khan: An Arboretum. While not as big or filled in as the Theurgy’s, there was a lovely little stream winding its way around the space, a few trees, some bushes and various plants, as well as a pair of benches flanking opposite sides. He took some time to move about, examining the various spaces. Daniel hadn’t opted for any sort of larger rock formation, to which the Trill had to admit was kind of disappointing. He’d always loved finding a nice perch to sit on and draw his surroundings. The lack of filled in spaces didn’t negatively affect the room, as it offered more space for people to relax. Also perhaps because this is a military vessel and they didn’t want to put as much effort into it? Something to perhaps ponder later.

Finally settling into a bench by the river and placing his custom PADD on his lap, Derik turned his attention back to the author of their environment. “I like it. Not too cluttered or complicated, but enough green that one could still enjoy themselves.” Veradin’s eyes drifted to the stream as he spoke, getting lost looking at the dark rocks beneath the surface of the flowing current. The distraction only lasted a moment though before he caught himself staring. “Do you have plans to expand it or other additions? Do you feel like hanging out here for a bit?”

Daniel nodded as Derik gave his answer.  He was familiar with the term ‘dating’ but he was never fond of it, he was never looking to just date with no intention of marrying.  He was very selective in the women that he chose to court as his ultimate goal was marriage.  Krissy had been the closest he had ever come to proposing to a woman.  They had both mutually agreed to end the courtship until after they had found out what their new assignments would have been, it was supposed to be a temporary hiatus but she had died on the Resolve in what had become the Battle of Starbase 84.

Daniel smiled as his friend complimented the work he had done on the room.  “Thank you.”  He replied.  “I don’t really have any plans for expansion as the room is mostly complete, save for some minor additions later, I intend to place golden plaques around the room with the names of those members of the Resolve crew who didn’t make it, an homage to their sacrifice.”  Daniel said as he walked over to one of the benches and sat down.  “I wouldn’t mind spending some time here with you, I’m quite fond of this room at the moment.”  He said with a smile as he gazed across the room taking it all in.  It was too bad that this was all fake, there were times that he wished it existed in the real world.  “Got anything in particular you’d like to do?”

Derik considered the question carefully, weighing various ideas of what they could do. They could keep walking through Daniel’s holonovel? No. He seems like he just wans to take it easy. They could go somewhere else on the ship or down to the planet? No. Same result. The trill bit his lip, thinking of what they could partake of while staying on the holodeck. He looked own at his PADD, considering the reason it was specifically built as an option. Daniel had modeled for him in the past aboard the Resolve, though it was only while he worked on something, leaving the helmsman woefully unsatiated with the results. Fuck it. Why not?

With a little digging though his personal database, Derik began compiling a selection of images of people that had posed for him in the past. He made sure to only include those not from the Resolve, and ones he’d received prior permission to show the images to others. All of the images involved people in various states of undress, so the Trill took the additional precaution that any of the male pictures had their groins covered or out of view. Havenborn was likely to react poorly to those. In the end he was left with a composition of about 80% women and 20% men. Taking one finally pass over the selection, Derik nodded, got up, and made his way over to join his friend.

Sitting down next to him, he held up his PADD and played the slideshow. “Remember when you did a little of this way back when on the Resolve? Think you maybe want to try again? Put yourself out there for a bud?”

It was certainly a fair bit to be asking of the man but Derik hoped they trusted each other enough to try.

As Daniel was enjoying the work that he had created, Derik sat down next to him and pulled his customized PADD up as it began to display a slideshow of men and women in different stages of undress, he frowned as he watched the male images slide past on the screen.  The way that they had been censored did not sit well with him.  He had no problem with seeing naked men or women, he had grown up in a society that had no problems with nudity.  He had seen his fair share of nude men and women growing up on Mars and even in his service with Starfleet.  TacCONN wasn’t known for its separated showers or locker rooms.

“I recall when I did that, it was a fun experience."  Daniel stated as he thought back to the modeling session that Derik had asked him to pose for.  Daniel had been happy to pose for his friend but he felt that it’d be better if he had posed doing something, after all his holoprograms wouldn’t write themselves.  “I suppose so, what did you have in mind this time?”  He asked, Daniel could certainly think of a few scenarios that he would be up for trying.

Derik pondered the question, gently chewing the inside of his cheek while he thought. Banishing the slideshow still playing on the screen of his PADD, the Trill flipped through images of various sceneries seeking inspiration. The Red Forests of Nibiru? No. Too bright. People tend to disappear into those kinds of colors. A metropolis? Nope. Overdone. The more he thought about it, the more he felt some kind of stone needed to be involved. Yet the addition of such a filter still yielded far too many results. Then what? Water always had merit in Veradin’s opinion when it came to art. It often lent itself well to life aspects with its movement. But how incorporate the two….

A beach? Now that idea rang true. While he did mention wanting to visit and ocean earlier, the holodeck was imminently convenient. It might’ve not been the real thing but it would suffice. Just any old beach wouldn’t do though. Derik Knew exactly which one he wanted. It took some searching but eventually the located the scene.

It was a small secluded beaching, filled with primarily large rocks rather than sand. Backed against a cliffside with a small path leading down to the beach, it provided for a scenic and some my say, intimate, location. There were plenty of places for the Trill to perch while he worked as well as plenty of space for Daniel to move around.

“What about something here?” He asked. “We don’t have to leave the holodeck and you can even go for a swim.” The hint was rather on the nose but it wasn’t as if it was going to be out of the way or anything.

As he looked at the location that Derik showed him via his customized PADD, Daniel nodded.  It looked like a nice enough spot, although when Derik mentioned swimming Daniel’s mind immediately went back to the situation he had with Amelya a few days prior, his first foray into a real ocean didn’t quite go as he thought it would.  He knew that the holodeck conditions would be controlled but honestly he wasn’t really feeling up to swimming of any kind at the moment.  The incident had been a quick trauma but it was still fresh in his memories and he was kind of ashamed of it.  He could just imagine hearing his drill instructors admonish him on his failure to maintain his balance, especially in a new environment.  If something like that had happened during his training he’d have been flogged for his failure in addition to the reprimands.

“I’m liking the location but as for swimming I think I might bow out of that for now, I had an incident recently that has put me off from swimming.”  He said, if Derik pried for more information he’d explain but he didn’t feel like volunteering that information.  “Is there something in particular you’d like me to be doing or can I free form it?”  Daniel asked as his mind began running through a list of possible things he could be doing to pose for his friend.  Depending on what Derik wanted him to do he might even be able to get away with some work for his holonovel.

Derik bit his lower lip for a moment, thinking on if he wanted something particular or not. Their previous sessions had been somewhat planned out. Perhaps moving away would be best for now. “Nah you are free to wing it. I don’t see a reason to do anything specific pose wise. Feel free to surprise me!” The Trill was just happy for the opportunity again with one of his friends.

“Computer,” He called out to the system, “Access my personal files. Run program Veradin Gamma 2.”

The world around them shifted, the MCV Khan’s arboretum dissolving into nothing, only to be replaced by the beach Derik had been showing Daniel. When they stood up from the bench, it too faded away and was replaced by a large stone half buried in the sand. The ocean softly lapped at the beach a few meters away. The stones around them had been looked rough and pitted but actually had been worn smooth by the rising and falling tides over many years. A few seagulls called to each other in the distance, perched up on the cliff but not flying nearby. Birds were okay for scenery but Veradin didn’t want them to interfere with their peace. It was better if they stayed more of the background. The sand beneath them was smooth, more smooth pulverized rock than typical sand. It didn’t stick to their shoes. The wind blew softly around them, enough to ruffle their hair a little but nothing more. The air smelled gently of salt, a welcome fragrance given all the time aboard a sterile ship they spent.

“I trust this will do?”

The first thing that Daniel noticed was the smell of the new location, the salt was definitely a change and not one that he quite enjoyed but if this was what his friend wanted then so be it he would go along with it just as his friend had gone along with his.  As he took in the new surroundings he felt the gentle breeze and relaxed a little, it was a nice to take a break from his programming to just relax a little.  He stared out at the holographic ocean for a moment, his experience from a few days prior still fresh in his mind and while he knew that this was a controlled environment he still had a slight aversion to it, it wasn’t something he was quite ready to get back to trying again quite so soon but given some more time he knew he would get over it.

Daniel nodded at the question.  “This will do quite fine, a lovely spot.”  He said.  “Computer, add the following items 1 meter to my right.  Object: Alpha-151, Objects: Gamma-117 and Gamma-181 along with Items: Alpha-707, Beta-175, Beta-176, Gamma-100 and Delta-212, also give me Item Set: Kappa-343.”  Daniel said as the computer acknowledged his request, and three feet away from him materialized a workbench and some tools along with several weapons of non-Federation design, one small handheld weapon, two medium rifle sized weapons and a larger shoulder mounted weapon, along with a sort of industrial fabricator style machinery that attached to the workbench.  “My next project is working on these weapons from my homeland, attempting to rebuild them from memory since there is no information on them within Starfleet’s database once they’re rebuilt I can then copy them and distribute them into my sandbox program and my holonovel.”  Daniel explained.  “I also assume having me in one spot would help you out.”  He added.

When the program activated, and Daniel looked around at it, Derik could tell something was a tad off. Despite the man-made and completely controlled nature of their surroundings, his friend was…nervous? Uncomfortable certainly. The Trill surmised to keep an eye on the situation just in case he needed to change venues at the drop of a hat.

Daniel called out a series of commands, the holodeck taking no time to materialize each item as it was referenced. First a workbench, then a variety of tools and small machinery, and finally some oddly shaped, but clearly weapons in origin, onto its surface. Veradin stepped closer, surveying the variety of items in a little closer detail. While clearly not Federation design, each appeared as if they were built with the human form in mind. Havenborn explained that they were apart of his next project, intending to add them to his holonovel. Interestingly he was attempting to recreated the design and functionality all from memory and what snippets he might have been able to find in their database. It was ambitious but it looked like he was making good progress so far. “I can see that,” the helmsman commented as Daniel finished his explanation. The project somewhat detracted from the scenery but Derik was confident that he could work around it without much issue. If it made his friend more comfortable, Daniel was more likely to work on whatever might be ahead for them in this little get together.

“And yea, having you in roughly one location does help. Keeps the background from getting too busy.” Derik turned and hopped up onto a nearby rock, crossing his legs as he tried to get comfortable. The stone was smooth but it took him a moment to find a good seated position that left him balanced and roughly flat. After fidgeting with it, in a show that no doubt would prove amusing in its ridiculousness, the Trill cleared his PADD’s screen, brought up a fresh blank canvas and looked up. “Whenever you’re ready bud.” Veradin wasn’t sure how Daniel might want to start given their history in a variety of places, positions, and attire but he was eager to find out. It would be fun no matter where it went.

Daniel watched as his friend hopped up on the rock and then he walked over to the workbench and began to pretend to work on the smaller hand-held weapon, really he was accessing the workbench’s console and inputting programming code, visually however it looked as though the weapon was being taken apart and various bits and pieces were being added or removed as needed.  “So how are things going in the CONN department these days?”  He asked making some small talk.  Daniel had helped out as a CONN officer every so often during their time on the Resolve, typically during times of extreme need or other times that he was needed.  TacCONN and CONN weren’t all that different really, they used some of the same techniques when piloting their craft, one of the major differences though was that a starship didn’t have the response times of a warp fighter.

Daniel’s attention to the detail of the weapon itself began to show as well, the originally form had been more blocky but as Daniel searched his mind he changed the design several times; at times it looked like a 20th century firearm and then at other times it looked similar to TacCONN’s pulse phaser pistol.  Eventually Daniel settled on a specific design that resembled a 22nd century Earth plasma weapon.

The Trill worked diligently, doing his best to make the most of the opportunity before him. While Daniel’s workbench was quite the stark contrast to the environment around him, his positioning did offer Derik the chance to make some artistic leaps. So instead of drawing the work surface, filled with firearms, Veradin instead created the hull of a small boat. Nothing special, it was more of a dingy than anything. Otherwise it would have taken up too much of the space. It wasn’t perfect by any means, but it fit well enough that he just kind of let it be.

“Uh you know how it is: Wake up, eat, pilot, try to relax, sleep, repeat. You guys in Tac CONN have it easy honestly. All you have to worry about is yourselves in those fighters. Every weapon that impacts the hull of Theurgy makes me wince. I always worry that someone got hurt or worse because I made the wrong decision with a maneuver.”

More and more of the basic shapes took shape, but the Trill didn’t bother going the greatest of detail. As an opener he didn’t need to spend the greatest effort on this picture. He had to pace himself.

“What about things in Tac CONN? I know ya’ll have been pushed pretty hard as of late.”

Daniel looked up at Derik and chuckled. “You know I’d agree with you were we still in Hell Sector, but sitting in the cockpit of a fighter going up against dozens of enemy fighters or even assaulting a capital ship isn’t easy.  Neither of our jobs is it seems.”  Daniel said as he made some final adjustments to the sidearm and saving the file.  He stood up and surveyed the scene, originally he felt that getting some work done for his holonovel could be a good way to spend their time but now he saw that the workbench and weapons were kind of an eyesore.  He stood back from the workbench.  “Computer, save objects in front of me and store them in project folder Alpha-Alpha-One.”  Daniel said as he watched the objects in front of him disappear.

“I’ll work on that project later.  I don’t know about you but it was beginning to feel like an eyesore to me.”  He explained.  “Although I’m not really sure what else I could be working on here that would feel more natural.”  He said.  “Any suggestions?”  Daniel was kind of at a loss as to figure out what else he could work on, a warp fighter would also look out of place, as would one of his homeland’s gunship or gunboat crafts.  Maybe a ground transport of some kind would be more appropriate but his knowledge of ground transports was limited.

Derik finished up one last little piece before saving and filing the image away. Maybe he’d come back to it another time and flesh out some more. Finished, he looked up, leaned forward supporting himself with his elbows on his knees and thought. ”Well easy in the sense that the only life your directly responsible for out there is your own. You still have a lot to contend with out there that doesn’t necessarily trouble a vessel the size of Theurgy.” The Trill took a deep breath head cocking to the side. ”I’m glad you realized it was kind of out of place. As for what else you could be working on? Ummm…” Derik looked up at the sky trying to work out what could be done with the space without really effecting the scenery.

The inherent problem was simply with the location. The beach, especially one so rocky, was not idea for mechanical work of almost any kind. It was a bad place to even work on a boat now that he thought of it. Too many hazards. On top of that, there were not really flat spaces, so whatever it was going to be, it would have to be suspended. Well either suspended or floating. Wait. Floating! The solution was so blatantly obvious that Derik chastened himself for not thinking of it sooner.

”How about this? You could work on anything you wanted, as long as it floated above and behind me.” The Trill looked up at the sun for a moment checking it’s angle. Its position would cast a shadow so Derik adjusted it by a few degrees from his PADD. ”If you use a PADD, you could look like you were essentially reading here on the beach without having a larger object eat up the space. By making the tech float above and behind me, it would be close enough to see but not so close that it would mess with the scenery. You could even work on larger objects now that I’ve adjusted the position of the sun a little.” The helmsman brought up a fresh canvas on his PADD, ready for a potentially new pose. ”Feel free to get comfortable and pick anything your heart desires.” It may have been too forward but the helsman decided it was worth noting. "I would ask that you consider the scenery and maybe try a little bit of different attire. The military uniform seem...odd given the area."

Daniel smirked.  “We’ll have to agree to disagree on that, in my mind Tactical CONN is the Theurgy’s first line of defense against most threats.”  Daniel said.  The fighters were designed to fight firstly against other fighters, but they could be equipped to deal with larger threats like capital ships.  While a single fighter alone couldn’t do much more than harass a capital ship, a flight or squadron could severely cripple or even destroy a capital ship given the right loadouts.

He nodded as Derik commented on his realization, although as Derik brought up the suggestion about having whatever Daniel wanted to work on float above them he shook his head.  If he was going to work on a PADD there was no reason to have the object floating or hovering above them, maybe he’d just read instead.  Uriah had suggested a book for him to read up on that he had saved on file, maybe he’d start that and Derik could continue his work while he did that.  “If it’s alright with you, how about I read, Uriah suggested a book for me to start.”  Daniel stated.  “I’m interested in seeing what kind of book he thinks I’d like.”  He said with a slight chuckle.  Uriah wasn’t known the type known for reading literature so it had surprised Daniel when his friend had suggested it.

Although when it came to his attire he was a bit taken back, with the exception of his date with Amelya he wasn’t fond of civilian style wear.  He would make certain exceptions for some people, Amelya being one of them since he was trying to court her, but in this instance he wasn’t comfortable not wearing a uniform, so he decided that he’d change back to his TacCONN duty uniform.  “Computer change my clothing to TacCONN duty uniform, with pilot flight jacket.”  He said as the computer acknowledged him and his attire changed.  The jacket at least afforded him some level of casualness.  “This is about as close to casual as I’ll get.”  He said, he figured that Derik would have remembered his dislike for civilian style clothing, but perhaps it was just something that he forgot about.

”Yeah reading will work just fine.” Certainly better than working on something that was hovering twenty feet in the air. The helmsman wondered why he hadn’t thought of it. Its simplicity was ideal. Given his request for Daniel to read the environment a little as well, Veradin expected Havenborn to adopt some sort of beach attire, or relaxation wear.

The Trill however was mistaken. Exceedingly so. While he had half forgotten that Daniel did indeed not like casual clothing, he figured the man would have loosened up at least a little bit by now. Nope. Not the case. Of all the things his friend chose to wear: A TacCONN Duty uniform with a flight jacket. Polar opposite of what the scene called for. Stuck out like a sore thumb again. Daniel must really not have visited a beach. Ever. Or if he did, it must have been too out of his comfort zone. If anything, he was just as formal as when they started. Perhaps it had been the isolation of their long voyage home that had allowed Daniel to loosen his collar per say last time, perhaps it was simply a disinterest this time. Neither appealed to the Trill.

Dejected, Derik set his PADD down next to him on the rock and hopped off, retrieving the device a moment later. He tucked it under his arm and looked right in to Daniel’s eyes. “Perhaps asking you to participate again was the wrong decision on my part.” He said with a sigh. “Don’t take this the wrong way but your mind doesn’t seem to be here in my opinion. If I wanted to draw a someone in a uniform, I would have simply watched the comings and goings of the crew. I realize I asked you to do something that isn’t really in your typical character but it’s nothing new. We’ve done this before. You seem almost….more wound up then our time on the Resolve He gave a half smile to show he had no malice and turned, walking up the path.

“Computer, Exit.” He called after a few steps, the system materializing the entrance to the holodeck a few meters ahead of him immediately. ”Hope the book is good though! Thanks for showing me around your Holonovel again. Feel free to keep using the program. Perfect reading environment if you ask me.” He called over his shoulder, heading for the door.

Daniel look confused as his friend spoke, he knew what kind of person he was, knew that he was comfortable in the uniform.  If he was given a choice he would wear what he liked.  Hearing Derik comment that he seemed more worked up than on the Resolve wasn’t entirely inaccurate considering the past couple weeks they had.  He wasn’t sure how his friend was so completely relaxed given their current situation.  Daniel almost would have preferred to spend another three years in what had become dubbed as Hell Sector than the current situation he found himself in.  “How can you not be more wound up?”  He asked angrily.  “We’ve been declared traitors, the whole of the Federation wants us dead and...”  Daniel said as he clenched his fist tightly turning his back on his friend, that outburst wasn’t like him maybe Derik had a point after all.  “Never mind.”  Daniel said as he unclenched his fist.

Daniel turned back just as Derik had called for the exit and was about to leave.  “Wait.”  Daniel said.  “What would be more appropriate, I don’t quite know what people wear to the beach.  There aren’t any beaches in the Domed Cities and during my trip down to the planet I wore a Chlamys the entire time.”  He left out the part where he got soaked; he wanted to help his friend, he just wasn’t really sure how to do it, artistic nudity was a foreign concept among his people and his experience was limited to only what Derik had shown him.

“How can you not be more wound up?”

The way Daniel barked at him angrily almost made Derik miss a step. Instead he stopped, letting the man finish whatever he had to say so that he might address said grievances efficiently and all in one go. He turned around after, a cold look crossing his face as he walked the few steps back to stand directly in front of his friend.

“Why don’t I answer your questions in order hm? You want to know how I’m so cavalier about us being branded as traitors? Truth is I’m not. It bothers me like it does every other crew member on this ship. We are ALL being portrayed as betraying the Federation. However, I will not allow my enemy to break me with such weak psychological attacks. No matter what they say, no matter what they call me, I am Starfleet to the core. My allegiance is to the Federation, to our people. They can brand me whatever they’d like. Hell. They can even make me a martyr. But no matter what they do, I will perform my duties to the bitter end. I would dishonor my uniform if my commitment was anything less. I suspect you feel the same way about yours.” Derik took a deep breath, trying to let the tension out. He hadn’t really meant to start blowing up there but Havenborn had made a mistake, and the Trill  had thought it better to set the record straight.

”As for what you could wear, why didn’t you go with the Chalays? You’re talking about that ancient Greek short cloak kind of clothing, right? That would have been perfect Daniel. It’s light, comfortable, open, and I can see how it would fit the scene.” If Daniel had used such a piece before, why did he not do so again? It certainly would have been more appropriate than duty attire. Taking the initiative to move a little before the pilot responded, Veradin backed up to the rock he had been sitting on a moment ago and leaned against it. ”Look I’m not asking you to go for gold and just take everything off in one go. I was trying to give you a kind of slow work up to that. I know artistic nudity is lost on you in most ways. We both know you aren’t shy about your body, just that you were confused. I’m sorry. I should have explained better.”

Daniel sighed, it wasn’t like him to let an outburst like that out, he tried to maintain a calm and collected manner the way he had been taught but even with his enhancements and his military training he was still only Human.  “I do feel the same way; I just-.”  Daniel stopped, he had only told a handful of people about the news he received from his Uncle, better to keep that close to the chest.

“I’m not sure what that is but the Aldean Chlamys is a long robe-like garment.  Computer replicate a standard Aldean Chlamys and replace it with my current outfit.”  Daniel said as the computer replied and replace the clothes he was wearing with the long robed Aldean Chlamys, it was a mixture of orange and red with purple trimming.  It replaced the uniform that Daniel had replicated earlier.  “This is the Chlamys, I didn’t really think this would work for what you wanted to do, that’s why I went with the Starfleet uniform.”  Daniel said.

“And you’re right, artistic nudity is lost on me, there wasn’t a whole lot of demand for it within my culture and my experience with it is limited to my interactions with you.”  Daniel explained, sure there was pornography but that wasn’t really all that artistic.  “So now that we’ve got that settled what would you like me to do?”

”That’s…..” Derik stopped himself from finishing what he was originally going to say. It wasn’t much better than the duty uniform. While the Trill could see how the garment might fit in to the present terrain, it was still too much. Not that it much mattered at this point. ”…better I suppose.” It was a lie of course but one meant to avoid further arguments if possible.

In attempt to buy himself time, whilst under the appearance of examining Daniel’s new attire, Derik stood there, carefully looking over the garment. He kept his face as neutral as possible, especially since he was trying to decided what to do. The robe was certainly more colorful than the helmsman had been expecting. Definitively traditional Aldean in origin, the primarily orange and black rode had a rather complex pattern across it’s entirety. A primarily red sash hung from the right shoulder, with accents of blue through the middle and purple tinging along the edges. There wasn’t anything wrong with it, but sometimes the Trill simply wished people would take a hint. The problem came from the fact that it covered up Havenborn’s form, even worse than a duty uniform in fact. The idea was to express a person’s lines, curves, forms, etc. This….this was going to be a essentially a blob with a head and arms.

”It’s not bad. Not really what I was looking for but I can work with it. But before I do, have a look at these eh?” Derik pulled up a selection of pictures of various swimwear or lounge-wear that would be more appropriate for the scene. He made sure to include the Earthern Greek Chlamys amongst the images just for reference purposes. ”Let me know if anything strikes your fancy.”

Daniel could tell from the way Derik said better that it wasn’t really but this is the type of garment that was worn down on the planet, he was curious now if his friend had been down to the planet yet.  From his reaction he had to assume that he hadn’t but maybe he had gone on some sort of official business and had gotten away with wearing his uniform.  Whatever the case may be this seemed like it wasn’t what he was looking for either.  He watched as Derik walked around him examining the outfit he was now wearing.

As Derik began to show him a selection of other outfits he could wear Daniel watched, looking for something that wasn’t anything like his uniform or like the Chlamys.  He watched as the selection of choices cycled by, nothing really stuck out to him.  He decided that he should probably pick something at least, after all it wasn’t as if he had to wear it all the time.  “How about that one.”  He asked as he pointed to an swimwear outfit, it looked similar to the Theurgy’s male swimwear but had a multifaceted color design, it was about the only thing that looked decent enough from his selection.
